![]() Breast Augmentation Breast augmentation consists of insertion of prosthesis under the breast or under the breast and chest muscle and filling the bag with saline i.e. salt water. By this prosthesis it expands the breast area for giving a full breast, give better contour and more cleavage. By this procedure we can change the shape and increase the size of the breast. Mainly this is done to enlarge an under developed breast or a breast that has become small after the child birth. The size of the breast will be increases permanently depending on their available loose skin of the existing one. This surgery is mainly done under local anesthesia or short acting general anesthesia and the patients can go to their house on the same day after operation. Normal breast feeding can be done after augmentation and there will be no problems with the personal life, which improves after breast enlargement surgery as it plays an important role. Risks and complications: 1. Infection - Even the infection is more(1-3%) it can be a very distressing problem. The signs of the infections are fever, redness, swelling and discomfort 2. Bleeding - If the bleeding occurs into the implant pocket after the surgery then the implant must be surgically removed, the bleeding will be controlled, the wound will wash out and the implant will be replaced. Signs of bleeding are marked swelling, pain will be increases and brushing. 3. Capsule contracture - Breast will become hard with distortion and it gets pain in sometimes and may require surgical incision of the fibrous scar capsule around the implant or total removal of the scar capsule. About 30-35% of patients have recurrent capsule contracture. 4. Asymmetry - This implant sometimes will slip out of the position in which it is placed and appear too high, low or to one side. 5. Mammography - It will block some areas of the breast from being visualized on mammography. This is less if the implant is placed under the muscle. 6. Autoimmune - With all the confusions in the newspapers, magazines and T.V. or radio, that there has been a confusion that silicone implants may cause autoimmune disease. But according to scientific evidence that silicone won't cause autoimmune disease. 7. Cancer - There is no proof that silicone will cause cancer 8. Calcifications - Implants which have been in a patient may cause calcifications in the scar capsule around the implant. 9. Deflation - An implant may leak from weakness in the patch or valve area, a hole from incomplete inflation or may be the other factors. The modern saline implant has been estimated to leak in 1-5% of cases.
